Hot Geysers and Pink Flamingos are two attractions that are synonymous with Lake Bogoria National Reserve, a hidden gem of a lake in a volcanic region located near the equator. The lake is endowed with endless swarms of bright, pink flamingoes. Steamy hot springs dot this lake and its surrounding areas adding more to this “out of this world” atmosphere. Bubbling geysers erupt along the banks and from within the lake itself. Lake Bogoria National Reserve offers a sight and experience you are unlikely to find elsewhere.
Lying south of the equator, Lake Bogoria National Reserve is located about 240 kilometers north west of the city of Nairobi. It is a park in Kenya like no other especially during the months of August to October. At this time when the Lake’s water levels are low, huge flocks of Flamingos arrive here, giving the lake a pink hue. Being migratory birds, the lesser and greater Flamingos arrive here at this time to feed on feed on the algae found on the lake’s still waters. Lack on an outlet to the lake makes it saline thus producing a lot of blue and green algae. A substantial amount of these colorful birds is still present during the other months of the year. There are a few spectacles comparable to watching Flamingos. When approached, the birds will protectively move away and with no further disturbance to their peace, they will settle back, creating an impression of great a pastel postcard.
Occupying an area of 107 square kilometers (with 34 square km. being covered by water), Lake Bogoria Reserve’s vegetation is dominated by thorny bushes of acacia, with the open shores of the alkaline lake dominated by grasslands and the sedge Cyprus found around the hot springs.
Although renowned for its abundant birdlife, the Lake Bogoria eco system supports a variety of wildlife. It is one of the best places in Kenya to see the greater Kudu- a magnificent but shy antelope. The acacia woodland found of the park is home to Klipsringer, Buffalos, Impalas, Zebras, Warthogs, Gazelles, Baboons and even the rare Leopard.
Access to Lake Bogoria National Reserve is mainly by road, with comfortable drives from Nairobi, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Aberdare National Parks. Talk to the Essenia Safari Experts team for a safari quote or package that includes a visit to Lake Bogoria National Reserve.
