The Highlands is a luxury tented camp located in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation area. The tented camp perches at the edge of a forest that encircles the Olmoti Volcano. Seating at 2, 600 meters above sea level, the Highlands is the highest located accommodation facility in the Ngorongoro area, affording sublime, panoramic vistas, as far as your eyes can see. Both sunrise and sunset are visible from camp.

Set on the lush slopes of Olmoti Volcano, The Highlands has sweeping views right across to the Serengeti. Enjoying an exclusive and unique location, the luxury camp features only 8 dome shaped suites, with the design inspired by the traditional Masai Bomas.

There is one family tent with room for kids and one special honeymoon tent with a hot tub. Each suite has a king-sized bed facing floor-to-ceiling windows and a deck that curves around the tent. En suite bathrooms have hot running water, showers and flushing toilets. At night, wood-burning stoves keep guests’ cosy and warm.

At the heart of the camp is a library with its indoor fireplace that replaces the typical safari campfire. Guests gather here each evening to share stories of the day’s wildlife experiences over pre-dinner drinks.

The 300 km squares, game rich and breathtakingly beautiful Ngorongoro Crater lies about 40 kilometers south of the camp. The crater, which is the largest inactive, intact and unflooded caldera in the world, was formed when a volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself 2 to 3 million years ago. It is now one of the best places in Africa for wildlife viewing, with the Big 5 and an extraordinary concentration of predators in the area.

The Highlands offers the best location from which to enjoy a day’s excursion to both the Olmoti Crater and the Empakaai crater.

There are two ways to access the Highlands Ngorongoro. You can fly to Lake Manyara airstrip followed by a 3-hour road transfer to the camp. You can also drive from Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania on a journey that takes about 5 hrs.
